“Summer’s Holes”: Teenage Turmoil
Published
2 weeks agoon
We’re thrilled to introduce Emily Hyde, an exciting filmmaker and director who is making waves in the industry! Her latest project, “Summer’s Holes,” has earned her a spot as a finalist for the Best Comedy Teleplay Award at the Houston Comedy Film Festival. The film centers on an awkward teenage girl trying to find her identity through her first job at a mini-golf course, only to face the chaos of a lunatic employer or retreat to the safety of her overbearing mother.
The Inspiration Behind Summer’s Holes
Emily Hyde’s inspiration for Summer’s Holes comes from her own teenage experiences working at a sports complex in a small Florida town. “Throughout high school, I worked at a sports complex that brought in every age of athletes and their families. I witnessed many bizarre happenings, from young kids running wild to roid-raging adults throwing full trash cans across an active playing field,” she recalls. Drawing on these memories, Hyde crafted a story that blends humor with the challenges of adolescence, setting it in the fictional world of a mini-golf course in BFE, Indiana.
Challenges and Triumphs
For Hyde, the most challenging part of writing Summer’s Holes was revisiting her own teenage years. “I really wanted to fit in during high school, but I didn’t really know how to, so I always seemed weirder than I actually was (and am). I look back now and ask myself, ‘why did I do that?’” she reflects. Despite the personal hurdles, Hyde succeeded in creating a script that resonates with anyone who has ever struggled to find their place in the world.
A Fresh Voice in Television
While Hyde is relatively new to writing for television, she has a background in sketch comedy and feature writing. Summer’s Holes marks her first original television pilot, showcasing her ability to capture the awkwardness and absurdity of teenage life with humor and heart.
Upcoming Projects
Hyde is currently working on an animated children’s feature titled Finding Your Scent. The story follows a nose-blind terrier on a mission to find his forever home after escaping a puppy mill. “It is a new genre for me and is still very much a work in progress, but it’s something I’ve found a lot of enjoyment in working on,” Hyde shares.

Looking Ahead
As Hyde continues to refine Summer’s Holes and explore new opportunities in the Orlando area, she remains open to connecting with producers, networks, and fellow creatives. With a bachelor’s degree in criminology and a master’s in screenwriting, Hyde is ready to bring her unique voice and vision to the world of television.
