Comedian Hasan Minhaj Confesses to Exaggerating His Stand-Up Routine on September 15, 2023 at 8:26 pm Us Weekly

Hasan Minhaj confessed that the real-life stories he tells in his stand-up routine are more fiction than fact.

“Every story in my style is built around a seed of truth,” Minhaj, 37, said in an interview with The New Yorker published on Friday, September 15. “My comedy Arnold Palmer is 70% emotional truth — this happened — and then 30% hyperbole, exaggeration, fiction.”

Minhaj explained that the stories he tells in his jokes are based on an “emotional truth” despite not actually happening to him in the first place.“The punch line is worth the fictionalized premise,” he stated.

In his 2022 Netflix special, The King’s Jester, Minhaj recalled an alleged time he received an envelope with white powder at his home. In the bit, he said he assumed the substance was anthrax and the powder accidentally spilled onto his daughter where he claimed she was rushed to the hospital. However, the doctor told them the powder was not poison.

One and done. Netflix has introduced its viewers to many unique TV shows over the years — but not every original series gets to explore their story beyond one season before getting canceled. Julie and the Phantoms developed a quick cult following when it hit the streaming service in September 2020. The musical comedy, which […]

Minhaj — who previously served as a correspondent for The Daily Show — revealed to the outlet on Friday that his daughter was never hospitalized nor exposed to a white powder. Instead, when the letter arrived at his house he joked to his wife, “Holy s–t. What if this was anthrax?”

Minhaj confessed that the goal of his jokes is to “highlight” the stories and build “a pointed argument” rather than a “pointless riff.”

“No, I don’t think I’m manipulating. I think they are coming for the emotional roller-coaster ride,” the comedian explained at the time. “To the people that are, like, ‘Yo, that is way too crazy to happen,’ I don’t care because yes, f–k yes — that’s the point.”

Following the New Yorker piece, Minhaj released an additional statement to Variety about where he gets his inspiration for his stand-up material.

“All my standup stories are based on events that happened to me,” he said in a statement while citing examples. “Yes, I was rejected from going to prom because of my race. Yes, a letter with powder was sent to my apartment that almost harmed my daughter. Yes, I had an interaction with law enforcement during the war on terror. Yes, I had varicocele repair surgery so we could get pregnant. Yes, I roasted Jared Kushner to his face.”

He continued: “I use the tools of standup comedy — hyperbole, changing names and locations, and compressing timelines to tell entertaining stories. That’s inherent to the art form. You wouldn’t go to a Haunted House and say ‘Why are these people lying to me?’ — the point is the ride. Standup is the same.”

The Real Housewives of Orange County stars have expensive taste — and a hunger for drama — and with Us Weekly’s help fans can also channel their inner Housewife.

In this week’s “VIP Scene,” Us Weekly is breaking down the RHOC cast’s go-to hot spots while staying local. First up: The Quiet Woman!

The Corona Del Mar, California, eatery is one of the most-frequented restaurants in the show’s history. In addition to being “classically cool since 1965,” The Quiet Woman was the infamous location for Shannon Beador and Kelly Dodd’s blowout fight on season 12.

“F—k you. Read between these lines you f—king bitch,” Shannon, 59, screamed at Kelly, 48, during the heated exchange. “Get the f—k out of here.”

The awkward encounter resulted in all the Housewives leaving the upscale location in shame — but that hasn’t stopped Shannon from dining there now.

“As far as restaurants go, of course we’re going to say The Quiet Woman,” Shannon exclusively told Us in September when asked about her “favorite” local food stop.

Gina Kirschenheiter picked San Juan Capistrano’s Five Vines Wine Bar — located not far from the famous Mission San Juan Capistrano — as her top restaurant in the area.

“I love Five Vines. That is my total jam. It’s also mine and Travis [Mullen]‘s date spot,” Gina, 39, exclusively revealed to Us. “This is a good plug too because it’s a wine bar and I am sober, but it’s so much more than a wine bar.”

Every orange can’t last forever! Following exits from OG star Vicki Gunvalson, Tamra Judge and Jo De La Rosa, Us Weekly is revisiting favorite former Real Housewives of Orange County stars. Gina swears by the eatery’s cheese and meat plate, gushing, “Just have everything! Their flatbreads [and] the spinach dip is to die for.”

If you’d rather be shopping than chowing down in Orange County, Vicki, 61, told Us that Alice + Olivia at Newport’s Fashion Island is a must.

“We shop at the same stores,” Vicki explained, referring to her and Shannon. The women noted that Neiman Marcus is also one of their go-to spots.

Vicki added: “There’s not that many stores in Orange County, especially in the Newport Beach area. So we tend to all shop at the same places.”

Sharna Burgess is opening up about experiencing mom guilt.

The former Dancing with the Stars pro, 38, took to social media on Tuesday, October 3, to candidly share her feelings about leaving her son while heading off for a tropical getaway. Posting a picture via her Instagram Story of her suitcase at the airport, she added text overlay that read: “New emotional experience unlocked.”

“I’m headed to Cabo for a girls trip that has been over a year in the making,” she wrote. “The timing sucks.”

Burgess shares son Zane, 2, with fiancé Brian Austin Green. She noted that while her toddler is “already on the mend from “HF&M,” the “mom guilt for leaving is unreal.”

Brian Austin Green’s brood! The actor is expecting his first child with Sharna Burgess after previously welcoming children with exes Vanessa Marcil and Megan Fox. Us Weekly confirmed the Dancing With the Stars pro’s pregnancy news in February 2022. The reveal came one year after the pair debuted their relationship. Despite the Aussie’s close bond […]

“I was going to back out but Bri so beautifully reminded me that I need and deserve these few days,” she said. “I’m so lucky I have a man that supports and sees me AND that I fully trust in knowing the house kids and life all keep flowing as normal even if I’m away.”

She concluded: “Everyone is ok. I’m ok…ish. And this will be fun.”

Burgess was first spotted with the Beverly Hills, 90210 alum, 50, in December 2020. The pair went on to dance together on Dancing with the Stars season 30, which Burgess called a “disadvantage” when speaking exclusively to Us Weekly in 2021, noting they have a “sensitivity when minding each other’s feelings.”

The pair welcomed their first child together — and Green’s fifth — in June 2022. In September, Burgess revealed the twosome were engaged after three years of dating. (Green shares son Kassius, 21, with ex Vanessa Marcil, and sons Noah, 10, Bodhi, 9, and Journey, 7 with ex-wife Megan Fox.)

While Burgess and Green are headed toward forever now, children have always been at the forefront of the professional dancer’s mind. In September, she shared exclusively with Us that it would have been a deal breaker with Green if he didn’t want to expand his brood.

“When it came to the kid conversation, I said early on to Bri if he was even interested in having more kids, because he has such a full beautiful group of kids,” she said. “I knew that I could really fall in love with him, and I had to stop right now if that wasn’t going to be on the cards.”

Burgess continued: “We did have that conversation early in our dating history, and he did say that he was open to it, so I knew that it could be forever. … I never prepared for it not to work.”

Joy Behar Jokes that Barbara Walters Had a ‘Porn’ Smile on October 3, 2023 at 11:10 pm Us Weekly

Joy Behar remembered her former The View cohost Barbara Walters by cracking an awkward — and NSFW — joke.

Behar, 80, poked fun at the late broadcaster’s signature smile on the daytime talk show’s Tuesday, October 3, episode. After Behar brought up Walters during an interview with Geri Halliwell, the Spice Girls singer recalled a lesson she learned from the anchor.

“[Barbara] said I have a camera smile that she uses. And I always still use this piece of advice. She says — you know sometimes how you feel a bit stiff? … You look into the camera, you go, “[Sigh],” and you get the right kind of smile. That’s the Barbara smile,” Halliwell, 51, told her cohosts.

Behar backed up Halliwell’s comments, adding, “Every time [Barbara] took a photograph, it was like, “[Sigh].” Noting that a person’s mouth has to be “slightly open” in order to nail the smile, Behar went on to joke, “Well, those are from her porn days.”

Paying their respects. The View brought together former and current cohosts to celebrate the life of Barbara Walters. “People have been talking about her on all of the shows, but we knew her better than anyone. We had dinners with her, we hung out with her and we fooled around with her,” Joy Behar shared […]

Sparking a shocked reaction from the show’s audience, Behar clarified, “No, I’m kidding. I’m kidding. They know it’s a joke.”

Cohost Sara Haines proceeded to change the topic by stating, “OK, now let’s move on.”

Despite the NSFW joke, Behar has shared several kind words about Walters following her death at the age of 93 in December 2022. “Barbara Walters passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by loved ones,” Walters’ rep, Cindi Berger, confirmed to Us Weekly at the time. “She lived her life with no regrets. She was a trailblazer not only for female journalists, but for all women.”

A television icon. Barbara Walters spent six decades as a hard-hitting journalist — interviewing everyone from controversial political leaders to some of the world’s most high-profile stars — prior to her retirement in 2014. The View honored Walters with a special tribute episode the following month, during which Behar called her former colleague “the original role model” for female broadcasters.

“People have been talking about her on all of the shows, but we knew her better than anyone. We had dinners with her, we hung out with her and we fooled around with her,” she said during the show’s January 3 episode. “The thing about her is she very much defied sexism and she defied ageism. She was not just a friend to us; she was one of a kind and very important to the industry.”

Behar and Walters were both part of The View’s original 1997 cast, in addition to Meredith Vieira, Star Jones and Debbie Matenopoulos. Behar briefly left the series in 2013 before returning two years later, a decision she claimed was not made on her own accord.

“I’ve been on this show for 26 years, right?” she said during a May episode of the series. “With a small hiatus as we all know — forced.” At the time of her 2013 exit, it was reported that Behar left of her own volition, after which she revealed she was actually let go by the network.

That same year, Behar claimed that Walters once tried to get her fired from The View after she leaked news that Rosie O’Donnell would be joining the cast. She recalled a phone call she received from Walters on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno in 2013, who allegedly told her, “’Hello, Joy? It’s Barbara. And I just want you to know I’m not renewing your contract.’”

Although she apologized, Behar claimed Walters put her foot down, saying, “’It was a big mistake! I’m not renewing your contract!’”
