Published

on

We’re thrilled to introduce Dianne Blomberg and Joseph Carabello, amazing screenwriters who are making waves in the industry! Their latest project, “Happy Landing,” has earned them a spot as a finalist for the Best Teleplay Award at the Houston Comedy Film Festival
The Inspiration Behind “Happy Landing”
The inspiration behind Happy Landing came directly from Dianne and Joe’s own lives. “Happy Landing was birthed from the truth—sort of,” they explain. The sitcom, set in a 55+ community in urban Austin, TX, follows two cash-strapped Boomers who run an illegal business from their condos. This 30-minute episodic series targets Boomers and their kids, offering a humorous yet relatable take on aging and the challenges it brings.
The Challenge of Writing
Although both Dianne and Joe are accomplished writers, “Happy Landing” was their first foray into screenwriting. “Learning the process was the most challenging part,” they admit. The journey took three years, but today, they are confident in their ability to craft engaging, entertaining teleplays.
A Duo of Experienced Writers
Dianne Bloomberg’s writing career began with her first published children’s picture book in 1999, while Joseph Carabello has been a freelance journalist since 2001. Together, they bring a wealth of experience to “Happy Landing,” blending their unique voices to create something truly special.
What’s Next?

Currently, Dianne and Joe are looking to connect with producers, directors, and managers to bring “Happy Landing” to life on screen. With a script that has already won several awards, they are optimistic about finding the right partners to help get the show sold.

The future looks bright for Dianne and Joe. They’re currently collaborating on a potential stage play or another TV comedy pilot called “Common Wall.” This new project revolves around two washed-up writers trying to revive their careers, only to find themselves in an unexpected vortex. Both writers also continue with their individual projects—Joe as a freelance journalist, and Dianne working on a book of essays.

Connect with Dianne & Joseph
Dianne is a member of The Authors Guild, Women in Film and Media of Colorado, and Denver Woman’s Press Club, where she once served as President. Joe is a proud member of the Society of Professional Journalists, adding to their credibility and commitment to the craft. “Profiles Of Remarkable Neophytes”: Finding Humor in the Unconventional

Published

on

We’re thrilled to introduce Gavin Michael Booth, a seasoned filmmaker with over fifteen years of experience in this industry! His latest project, “Profiles Of Remarkable Neophytes,” has earned him a spot as a finalist for the Best Mockumentary Film Award at the Houston Comedy Film Festival. Set in the unconventional world of an adult film shoot, this mockumentary blends humor with an insider’s look at the dynamics of an independent film set. For this project, Gavin collaborated with Brittany Charlotte Smith who helped co-write the script.
The Inspiration Behind “Profiles Of Remarkable Neophytes”
The film’s origin story is rooted in collaboration and a desire to explore new creative avenues. After relocating to Los Angeles, Booth teamed up with actors Brittany Charlotte Smith, Rae, and Rachel to create something special. The idea for the mockumentary emerged organically, with Brittany taking the lead on writing the script. Known for her comedic chops, Brittany found the setting—a mockumentary on an adult film set—ripe for humor.
Booth explains that the characters in the film are somewhat stereotypical of those found on any independent film set, but placing them in a realm often associated with societal shame added a layer of comedic complexity. The result is a film that humorously pulls back the curtain on a world that many might find taboo.
Challenges and Triumphs
Shooting the film presented a unique challenge: Booth had never worked with many of the actors before. Despite this, the team managed to shoot the entire film in just one day. Booth’s background in experimental features and shorts made him comfortable with trying unconventional methods and embracing improvisation. This approach required the cast and crew to trust in the process and be open to experimenting with their characters. Fortunately, the cast excelled, bringing fresh ideas and energy to their roles.
A Veteran Director with a Passion for Comedy
Booth, who has primarily worked in genres outside of comedy, found himself stepping into new territory with Profiles Of Remarkable Neophytes. Although he has only directed three comedy shorts to date, his love for the genre shines through in this film. His previous collaboration with Brittany on a science fiction short laid the foundation for their continued creative partnership.
What’s Next?
Looking ahead, Booth has a feature film titled “Sydney vs Sean” starring Janel Parrish (Pretty Little Liars) and T.R. Knight (Grey’s Anatomy) that is set to make its festival debut soon. Additionally, Booth and Brittany are working together on an innovative television series titled “Dreamcrusher”. The series promises a new way to engage audiences with its interactive element, allowing viewers to sign up as amateur detectives and compete for a $100,000 prize by solving clues throughout the show.

Connect with Gavin & Brittany
Booth and Brittany are eager to connect with industry professionals, whether it be agents, distributors, or fellow creatives. They can be reached via email or social media:
Festival Circuit and Beyond
As Profiles Of Remarkable Neophytes continues its journey through the festival circuit, Booth and Brittany are open to exploring distribution opportunities for the short film. Booth acknowledges that the short film market is unique, but he remains optimistic and curious about the possibilities.
Profiles Of Remarkable Neophytes is more than just a comedy—it’s an exploration of the quirky, often overlooked world of independent filmmaking, brought to life by a director and cast who aren’t afraid to push boundaries and embrace the unexpected.

“Hitch Hiking Is Safe”: The Ultimate Oxymoron

Published

on

We’re thrilled to introduce Ylia Trotter, an amazing screenwriter from New Zealand who is making waves in the industry! His latest project, “Hitch Hiking is Safe,” has earned him a spot as a finalist for the Best Dark Comedy Film Award at the Houston Comedy Film Festival. He has brought an intriguing mix of dark humor and suspense to life in this short film. The film, which draws from Trotter’s own experiences and a surprising conversation about the dangers of hitchhiking, explores the chilling yet comedic scenario where both the driver and the hitchhiker are serial killers.

The Genesis of “Hitch Hiking Is Safe”
The inspiration for Hitch Hiking Is Safe struck Ylia during a casual lunch with friends. Growing up in the remote area of Te Arai, New Zealand, Ylia frequently hitchhiked into town as a teenager. The conversation at lunch took a dark turn when his friends shared their fears of hitchhiking—one feared the driver might be a serial killer, while another worried about picking up a dangerous hitchhiker. This sparked the idea: what if both the driver and the hitchhiker were serial killers, completely unaware of each other’s true nature?

Ylia quickly realized the potential for a dark comedy. The concept evolved beyond a simple gag into a deeper exploration of the two killers’ psyches. As the story unfolds, these outcasts, who approach killing in different ways, find themselves recognizing a kindred spirit in one another. What begins as a humorous situation develops into a poignant moment of self-realization, as each character sees a reflection of themselves in the other.

Overcoming the Challenges
The production of Hitch Hiking Is Safe was not without its challenges. Filmed over three days, the shoot was plagued by unexpected rain, which, while initially a logistical nightmare, ultimately added to the film’s stormy horror atmosphere. In a fortunate twist, the script’s dialogue even mentioned the possibility of rain, making the weather an unintentional yet fitting backdrop for the film’s events.

In addition to battling the elements, Ylia and his team embarked on a unique journey of documenting the entire filmmaking process. They created weekly one-minute vlogs throughout pre-production, shooting, and post-production, culminating in a 20-minute documentary. This content not only engaged their audience but also helped them successfully crowdfund the film’s production budget. Although Ylia is proud of this achievement, he admits that the additional workload of creating so much content alongside the film was intense.

A New Filmmaker on the Rise
Hitch Hiking Is Safe marks Ylia Trotter’s debut short film, but his passion for filmmaking has been a lifelong pursuit. From creating Lego stop-motion movies as a child to vlogging and working in video production, Ylia has always been drawn to visual storytelling. After working at an agency and eventually starting his video business, Sharehouse Video, with his wife, he finally took the plunge into screenwriting during the 2020 lockdowns.

With his first short film now complete, Ylia is focused on honing his writing skills. Hitch Hiking Is Safe was a learning experience, designed to see how his words translated to the screen and to gain valuable lessons for future projects.

What’s Next?
For Ylia, the next step is more writing. He has a feature film script in the works, along with several other ideas he is currently outlining. With Hitch Hiking Is Safe just beginning its festival run, Ylia is eager to see how it performs and is hopeful for success on the circuit.

Connect with Ylia
If you’re interested in connecting with Ylia for future projects, you can find him on Instagram at @yliatrotter. Though he’s not currently a member of any film organizations, he’s always open to new opportunities and collaborations.

On the Horizon
As Hitch Hiking Is Safe begins its festival journey, Ylia Trotter is at an exciting crossroads in his filmmaking career. With a unique voice and a passion for darkly comedic storytelling, he’s a new filmmaker to watch. As he continues to write and develop new projects, Ylia is poised to make a significant impact in the world of independent film.
