Tesla announced a recall for some of its vehicles over a potential brake fluid safety issue.

The recall notice will affect 55,000 of its Model X vehicles from 2021-2023, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said.

The car may be unable to detect low brake fluid and not display a warning light, failing to comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard, NHTSA said.

“Without a warning light, the vehicle may be driven with low brake fluid, which can reduce braking performance and increase the risk of a crash,” the agency’s notice said.

Tesla, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, has released a software update free of charge to fix the issue.

The company said it will notify owners of the faulty vehicles in a letter mailed on Dec. 12, according to NHTSA. The number for this recall is SB-23-00-005.

Customers can contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752.

This is the company’s third recall in 2023.
