Russia Declares US an “Enemy” for First Time
Russia has officially declared the United States an “enemy” for the first time, marking a significant escalation in rhetoric and deterioration of relations between the two countries. This declaration came from Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of Russian President Vladimir Putin, during a press briefing on Tuesday. Peskov stated, “We are now an enemy country for them, just as they are for us.”
This unprecedented labeling of the US as an “enemy” by Russia is a stark departure from previous terminology used by the Kremlin, which had referred to the US and its Western allies as “unfriendly states” or “opponents” due to tensions over the Ukraine conflict. The timing of Peskov’s remarks suggests they were a direct response to the US authorizing Ukraine to use American-supplied weapons to strike targets within Russian territory.
Peskov’s comments followed allegations by former US intelligence officer Scott Ritter that he was barred from entering Russia and had his passport confiscated by border officials, allegedly on orders from the US State Department. Peskov implied that such actions against Americans would only be justified if they were related to Ritter’s previous intelligence activities.
By labeling the US as an “enemy,” Russia appears to be seeking to galvanize domestic support and justify more aggressive actions in the Ukraine conflict. This escalation in rhetoric and military involvement underscores the high stakes and potential for further deterioration in US-Russia relations.
