Jim Dziobek: Comedy and Enlightenment Win
In a candid conversation, filmmaker Jim Dziobek provides insights into his creative journey and the inspiration behind his latest project. Based in Chicago, Jim shares his experiences as a writer and director, delving into themes of spirituality, technology, and the surreal.
When asked about his involvement in the union, Jim reveals that he’s not currently a member. His film, “Enlighten Up,” is a short that offers a comedic exploration of enlightenment and self-discovery. Despite being relatively new to the industry, Jim’s passion for storytelling shines through as he discusses his three-year journey in writing and filmmaking.
In terms of his current process, Jim admits to always exploring new projects, driven by his ever-evolving attention span. While “Enlighten Up” is not currently in discussions with producers, Jim expresses his excitement for the film festival circuit and envisions it as a precursor for discussions on spirituality mixed with comedy.
Inspired by his own thoughts and experiences, Jim shares that his characters are often influenced by themes and ideas he grapples with internally. The main character, Rita, played by Joelle Velez, is inspired by a dear friend, while other characters reflect different aspects of Jim’s personality.
When asked about his screenplay’s place in the market, Jim sees “Enlighten Up” as a fitting addition to discussions on spirituality and humor. He envisions pairing a Buddhist teacher with a comedian to create a unique live performance experience.
Motivated by a desire to explore the concept of nothingness without dampening spirits, Jim’s storytelling journey collided with his interest in Buddhism, resulting in “Enlighten Up.”

As for his future projects, Jim reveals plans for a feature film centered around siblings in a cooking competition and a pilot involving a library and murder mystery. He also hints at venturing into 3D animation to further enrich his storytelling.
As a finalist for the Best Comedy Micro Film Award at the Houston Comedy Film Festival, “Enlighten Up” showcases Jim Dziobek’s talent and creativity, promising audiences a delightful blend of comedy and enlightenment.
