Delta State Student Found Dead on Campus; Investigation Underway

CLEVELAND, Miss. – A Delta State University student was found dead on campus early Tuesday morning in what investigators describe as a tragic incident that is still under review.

According to Delta State Police Chief Michael Peeler, officers received a call shortly after 7 a.m. reporting a body near the pickleball courts in the central part of campus. When officials arrived, they discovered 21-year-old Demartravion “Trey” Reed of Grenada, a current student at the university.

Chief Peeler confirmed during a press conference that at this stage, investigators have found no evidence of foul play, though the cause of death has not yet been released. “Our partners have investigated every avenue, and again, we continue to investigate,” Peeler stated.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, the Cleveland Police Department, and the Bolivar County Sheriff’s Office have all joined Delta State Police in reviewing the circumstances surrounding Reed’s death. Law enforcement emphasized that while speculation has spread rapidly across social media, official conclusions have not been made and the investigation remains ongoing.

The discovery comes during what was meant to be a celebratory week for the university, which had planned to mark its 100th anniversary. Instead, administrators canceled classes Tuesday and have not yet announced whether sessions will resume Wednesday.

Delta State University officials have not released further information but are asking for respect and privacy for Reed’s family and the campus community as they grieve.
