Bob Barker was a household name in the entertainment industry among generations.

Decades before becoming a beloved game show host, Barker was born in Washington. After spending his formative years in South Dakota and Missouri, he and late wife Dorothy Jo Gideon moved to Florida after college graduation, where he began his career in entertainment as an announcer for a Palm Beach radio station. One year later, they settled in California, and Barker landed his eponymous radio show.

Barker got his start on television hosting Truth or Consequences, which he helmed from 1956 to 1975, before emceeing the Miss Universe and Miss USA pageants in 1967. He began his 35-year tenure at The Price Is Right in 1972 before retiring in 2007.

Barker was also an impassioned animal rights advocate, launching his DJ&T Foundation – named after his mother and Gideon – in 1995 in support of animal-neutering programs.
